Indian books for Indian kids!

There’s no dearth of children’s books nowadays and while books by Dr.Seuss, The Bernestein Bears and Curious George are some of our favourites, I was on the lookout for Indian stories that I could read out to my kids that weren’t just about mythology. A friend recommended Tulika books and I’m eternally grateful to him!

Tulika is an independent publishing house based in Chennai that produces the most beautiful stories with absolutely gorgeous illustrations. The stories are simple, easy-to-read ones about animals, people or just everyday things told in a narrative style that kids can relate to. Some have messages without being moralistic and the non-fiction ones are supported by some amazing photographs. All books are available in English, some are bilingual and some titles are available in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, Marathi and Gujarati.

So far, we’ve sampled the ones in the 2- 5 age group, but they go up to 8+. My kids especially love the Bahadur series –about the smart baby elephant who helps out his friends. Titles in this series include Colour Colour Kamini, I’m so Sleepy and Snoring Shanmugam. Check these books out; they will soon become a staple in your household.

Available at most major bookstores in the city like Reliance Time Out, Strand, Crossword etc. Rs.65 – Rs.200 . Or buy it online at tulikabooks.com.
