If wishes were zebras, babies would ride.

I have found the perfect toy for a 1 year old that can keep him busy for much more than the usual 2 minutes, entertain the entire family when being played with and is the tool for excessive energy release. Ladies and gents (I know you drop by), make way for the Fisher Price Gymnastics Bounce and Spin Zebra.

Our little gymnast started with the zebra when he was 7 months. It bounces, spins and also has flashing lights and tunes emanating from a great clear roller ball filled with multicoloured beads that dance up through it. The physical development is so visible with this toy. From barely being able to get on to it unaided to standing on the seat and now balancing without holding onto the handles! From being fascinated with the lights and tunes to learning how to put it off and on and from bouncing warily to full on crazy bouncing and spinning with curls flying in every direction while the adoring audience cracks up laughing.
Older kids also get a great kick from trying out this zebra and it seems to be fine with 5 year olds too. One year plus and it still works fine.

Fisher Price Gymnastics Bounce and Spin Zebra – Rs. 3,499/.

Keeping the babes busy

Lets face it. The sad truth is babies in the 6 – 12 month development stage are really not that into toys. My 8 month old would go something like this - Oooh colourful thingy - must put in mouth - Mmm, tasty - drool, drool, drool – throw - Ok, that was fun - what’s next?

So once you’ve been through the rattles and things that go squeak and all the funny faces, which last for, oh, about 20 seconds, what is a poor mom to do??

Funskool’s Busy Poppin’ Pals is one way to go. The buttons operate in different ways to keep little hands occupied (while developing fine motor skills, no less) and the animals popping up when they get it right is always good for a laugh. I managed to get enough mileage out of this one until my kids were about two by asking them to guess the animals and colours for each button. Trust me, this was one of their favourites.

So plop baby on floor, stick a Poppin’ Pal under their nose and sit back and sip your coffee. This one’s too heavy for them to throw at your head when they’re done. Always a plus.

Available at all major department stores that stock Funskool through the city. Or buy it online at rediff.com for Rs.825.

Fun with wooden pegs

You are likely to see these fun pegs at playschools and Montessori’s. They are available at large stores but tend to get overshadowed by the more glitzy and  prominent brands. I recommend you look out for products by a brand named Skillofun.

They manufacture a wide range of educational wooden toys & games and the company is a member of the Toy Association of India.

We have found one set particularly useful in helping our baby understand colours and shapes. The task involves shapes – square, circle, rectangle, triangle and pentagon in primary colours that have holes and require to be matched with pegs on a wooden board.

The range includes wooden toys that encourage shape, form and size concepts with games such as shape/size sorter, geo cavity shape sorter, shape/colour sorter, and posting boxes. Language and number concepts with alphabet blocks, number blocks, capital & lower alphabet inset trays and Hindi alphabet inset trays. Hand and eye co-ordination games like sewing toys, hammer bench, fishing game and more.

Enjoy watching your child arrange the pegs according to colour, geometric shape, height, size and see the development of fine motor skill as well as eye-hand coordination. These games also stimulate their recognition and classification skill assisting with problem solving through trial and error.

If your baby seems too young for the task and gets frustrated, bring it out at a later date but introduce Skillofun for sure.

Available at most toy stores and online at Skillofun.com. Prices range from Rs. 75/- onwards
