Magic Potions

Our three magic homeopathic medicines

Everyone has a handy first aid kit to rush to for every ‘owch’ and ‘waah.’ In addition to the regular medicines we have what we call ‘magic medicines’ that work without wands or brooms – Arnica, Calendula and Dentonic.

My grandfather used these creams and tinctures on us during our childhood and the efficacy of these creams ensure that we have them handy too.

Arnica cream is used for bruises, bumps and any injury that does not involve a cut.

Calendula cream is for cuts, scrapes and open wounds.

Dentonic is a bottle of little sweet pills to be had every day to help ease teething problems.

I was nervous about giving my infant any non prescribed pills but I know that if I had to do it all over again, I would certainly start Dentonic from age of 2 months. We dealt with awful teething related issues – fevers, virals, crankiness etc. and after using this safe medicine, we have seen a drastic reduction in severity of teething problems.

Arnica and Calendula are not just for babies, they work excellently for everyone. If any of us hurt ourselves, our tot runs to the room saying ‘wait - I’m getting magic.’

All three products are available at all chemists.

Is There A Doctor in the House?

Kids fall sick. All the time. It’s one of the most distressing facts of parenthood. They are germ and viral infection magnets and that’s why all households with little kids are bound to have a mini-pharmacy stocked with goodies like cough syrups, fever medication, anti-allergy syrups and of course liquids to calm a troubled digestive system. After all, there are a varied set of problems attached to the last problem alone, whether it’s vomiting, loosies, gas or constipation.

Kids also fall. And get hurt. And acquire prize scratches, and bumps and bruises. Yes, they are quite boo-boo prone that way. And that’s why, it’s so important to have a proper first-aid kit all stocked and ready in times of emergency. Because when they get hurt, you don’t want to waste any time or lose your head in looking for things.

These are the must-haves that you require:

  • Medicated cotton to clean wounds
  • Sterile gauze to bind wounds
  • Adhesive bandages in different shapes and sizes
  • Crepe bandage in case of sprains and safety pins to secure it in place
  • Antiseptic ointments and powders, such as Neosporin
  • Betadine lotion
  • Calamine lotion to soothe rashes and insect bites
  • Burnol for burns
  • Tweezers to pull out splinters
  • Blunt scissors to cut bandages and cotton

And here’s an added touch…keep a couple of toffees in your kit as well. Guaranteed to stop the flow of tears. Works better when given in combination with a mommy-kiss!
