Learn to read with Winnie the Pooh and friends.

Euro Books is a company that brings internationally recognized brands like Barbie, Noddy, Disney, Enid Blyton and Tin Tin to many homes across India.

The Disney Winnie the Pooh Learn to Read series with large print has 15 titles and each one is exciting and alluring.

We have 6 of the 15 titles and our two year old has been hooked on to Pooh, Tigger, Roo, Piglet and Rabbit ever since his first of this series ‘Playing Pirates’ was read to him.

They are well written; just the right length (good for night time book rituals), have superbly produced images and each story has a subtle lesson to be learnt. You can choose from titles like A Sense of Fun, A Surprise Garden, A Tiggerific Band – this story has actually got me blowing into an old bottle to hear the ‘toot, toot, like Piglets flute’ or The Big Bug Hunt.
Crosswords has a hard cover with 5 titles of this series in each bound book, but I prefer the little single books which are light to carry while travelling as well.

Let your child have a smattering of Pooh and bounce off to a terrific start to reading and imagining adventures - Disney style!.

Disney Winnie the Pooh Learn to Read available as singles at any smaller book store for Rs. 50/-

A novice readers delight

Jump for joy when your two year old reads – ‘A tiger sleeps in the jungle’ all by himself with this pre reader book.

On a recent trip to Crosswords we discovered a really super book by Nora Gaydos. The suggested age group says 3-6 but our 2 year old loves it too.

This Pre Reader named ‘My World – Now I’m Reading for Beginning Readers’ is a set of 10 little books bound in one square hardcover. This best selling series combines the best of phonics and literature based reading. The book comes with 40 really cute round little incentive stickers to be placed before each story when the baby reads aloud by himself.

The read along book has strong picture clues, predictable patterned text for letter and sound recognition. ‘Polar Opposites’- Up and down, stop and go, hot and cold…., ‘On The Seesaw’- The ant is first, the spider is second….., ‘Look At Me Go’- My van goes up, up, up, my sub goes down, down, down….., ‘Sleeping Animals’ –A spider sleeps in the web, a snake sleeps in the grass….., ‘The Noisy Farm’- What did the hen say? Cluck, what did the farmer say? Quiet!….. are some of the titles and excerpts from this book.

Each page has been illustrated so beautifully by BB Sams that you could even use some of the images to create frames for your baby’s room.

Pre Reader, My World, Now I’m Reading for beginning readers. Written by Nora Gaydos, illustrations by BB Sams, available at Crosswords for Rs. 150/-

Knock Knock ! Who’s There? Doctor! Doctor Who? It’s Dr. Seuss!

Children’s Books by Dr. Seuss

Everyone who has shopped for children’s books has heard of Theodor (Ted) Seuss Geisel or more simply, Dr.Seuss. His most amazing quality is to be able to imagine like a child and express that in the form of wonderful stories and rhyme.

Each of his many books deserve a review by their own merit, but before I get carried away, I’ll list just a few favorites. “My Many Coloured Days” is a beautiful book illustrated with paintings that I could print and hang on my walls. This book introduces moods to children, a hard to grasp concept even for adults and ends on a wonderful note –“And I go back to being me” (good way to explain why Mommy has her grey and black days too). Then there is “Horton Hears A Who” which is a truly wonderful story in prose poetry about an elephant named Horton who hears a noise from a small creature that nobody else can hear, as the ‘Whos’ are very small. But Horton saves them as he thinks, “A person’s a person. No matter how small”, which is only one of the many messages that are imaginatively put across (this story has been made into an animated movie with Jim Carrey as Horton). Then there are the famous classics such as “Cat in the Hat” and “Fox in Socks”, a collection of tongue twisters that is a fun exercise for young kids. You can’t go wrong with any of them, honestly, this is creative genius with so many values, concepts and real issues woven into them.

I love them so much, I fight with my son over which ones to read, and I continue reading even after he’s fallen asleep.

Available at most bookstores and you should check out their website for fun and more titles.
