Goodbye Belly Woes

When I found out five months ago that I was pregnant, the kind words of reassurance, congratulations and advice started pouring in from all my well wishers, but nobody warned me that I would feel and look as awkward as I do right now.

This in-between stage, where my mid section has started to expand just a wee bit, but I don’t quite qualify for maternity clothes as yet, has been the cause of many I-hate-my-body meltdowns.

So last week I decided to do some research and I found a comfortable and surefire way to ‘cheat’ and get a few more wears out of my regular pre-pregnancy pants with the Belly Band. This is basically a circle of stretchy fabric that covers you from your belly to your hips like a belt, letting you wear your pants unbuttoned and unzipped without worrying about when they’re going to fall off! The Belly Band also creates the illusion of a layered-look when your old tops get a little too short and your new maternity tops are still a bit too big for your fast-expanding midriff.

It might not be easy to find belly bands in all maternity stores in India but fortunately they’re easy enough to make at home and are also a great way to reuse your comfortable old tee shirts. Alternatively, you could also use a stretchy tube top if sewing is not your forte.

How to make your own belly band:

Things You’ll Need:

  • An old tee shirt you no longer wear (preferably in a stretchy fabric) and some sewing experience!

Lay your shirt on a flat surface wrong side out, cut at the top part of the shirt where the two hems meet, hem the top half of the shirt and voila! la Belly Band.

Now go flaunt that belly!

Bangalore: Preggers and Stylin'!

Studio Mom Maternity Wear

There’s the initial honeymoon period of your pregnancy when everything you own still fits and all you sport is an adorable paunch. Of course, you’re mostly sick as a duck, but we’re not talking about that right now. As you go past the 4-month mark you start looking like you swallowed a beach ball and suddenly everything in your cupboard has shrunk 5 sizes. This can give rise to all kinds of negative emotions - an absolute no-no when you’re pregnant and absolutely unnecessary when there’s Studio Mom in the city to bring back that sense of well-being.

Kusum Gupta started
Studio Mom 10 years ago when maternity wear meant shopping in the men’s section for oversize kurtas. Despite an increase in maternity brands now, this little boutique has managed to hold its own thanks to great styling, comfort and affordability. If you’re looking for a few pieces to carry you through your pregnancy and beyond, Kusum can help you out. Her capris, trousers and jeans have adjustable elastic waists or narrow, wide or fold down bands to accommodate an ever-growing stomach and come in comfortable cottons and great styles. For casual wear there’s tights, yoga pants in a delicious fabric that I was lusting after, and dungarees - the only time a grown woman can wear them and look cute is when pregnant! I also loved the denim pinafores and long dresses that make you look and feel very Earth-Mother-goddess like. So if you’re expecting, stroll on down to Studio Mom and you’ll be stylin’ the whole way through your pregnancy - in a totally non-crabby way.

Prices range from Rs.595 – Rs.1500.

Studio Mom, #475, Ground floor, 13th Main, 3rd Block, Koramangala, Bangalore

Mummy to be Fashionista

Hip and funky maternity wear

Is it a bad thing that one of my main worries as an expectant mother was my weight? I was eating everything in sight and  fretting seriously about expanding. Expand I did - a lot! And though I enjoyed every minute of my pregnancy (in retrospect, that is), I hated going out. By the second trimester there were very few things I could wear that didn’t look hideous. It was right at this point that I heard about ‘Momease’.

My gynaecologist recommended the place; she figured I wasn’t going to be one of those lucky girls that wear their regular clothes throughout. I went the very next day and was pleasantly surprised. I instantly fell in love with the jeans and dungarees, the kangaroo pouch was a blessing, the fit really good and  the denim a softer, brushed version. I was also happy to find very trendy short and long kurtas. The main reason why the store is so well organized and hip is because the two founding partners were expectant mothers who felt the dearth of maternity wear in the city. Thanks ladies!

Their indo-western wear is very flattering to an expanding middle and the undergarments are all imported and very comfy. They also have exclusive office wear, which is a boon for working moms-to-be. For winter wear, I absolutely loved the ponchos. I also ended up doing a fair share of yoga, after getting lovely grey track pants and a baby pink hoodie. Apart from the stylish maternity wear, Momease also stocks a variety of baby products -  imported nursing bras and toys and accessories for newborns as well.

The store is located at 57, Vasant Vihar, New Delhi. For enquiries you can call - + 9810126289. ‘Momease’ is open 6 days a week, Tuesday is an off day. They are open from 11 am – 7:30 pm.

Flaunt your curves

Beautiful you – today, tomorrow and for the entire 9 months.

There are so few options when you think about trendy maternity wear in India. Now, say bye bye to the frumpy grandma frocks available down Hill Road or the lacy nighties all the expecting aunties wear.

Satya Alwani’s exhibition of maternity wear labelled 9Mois came at the right time for me just when I was bursting at the seams and had to attend weddings, Christmas lunches, dances and dinners and then, aargh! New Year parties too.

9Mois has an funky range of dresses, trousers, dungarees, skirts, formal and casual wear for mamas to be. All designs have an adjustable waist - a buttoned adjustable strap that allows for increase and decrease in size.

The designer assists you with fittings and sizes and truly means it when she says ‘Why should a woman look any less beautiful when she is pregnant?’ Cotton which is most comfortable is the preferred fabric but Satya also stocks a range of denim capris. The empire line cut is used in most of the tops and dresses to accentuate your pregnancy cleavage (halleluia). the colours are trendy and fun, too.

Go ahead, give Satya a call- why stop being a fshionista just because you’re preggers?

9Mois. Satya Alwani, 112 –B, Jolly Maker – 1, Cuffee Parade, Mumbai – 05
Prices from Rs. 1,500/- onwards.

Delhi + NCR: Kids Rooms

The Perfect Little Room

Most kids have their own room despite the fact that they bunk with their folks for what feels like forever! That’s the case with us by the way. The nursery happened before the baby did and hunting for stuff to accessorize it with was a journey that I am still on, it’s been four years! Since we weren’t aware of stores that stocked everything we needed under one roof and were budget priced, we customized the furniture with a local carpenter and decided to do the drapes, linen, bedding and accessories the traditional retail way.

After much reconnaissance we zeroed in on ‘Kids At Home’. The husband fell in love with everything he saw but I was quite definite about what we needed and what we could spend. They stock everything from bedding to customized throw cushions. The accessories include table lamps and baby gift sets and the linen is adorned with sporty and funky prints rather than cartoon characters.

They have a small maternity wear selection and this is a good place to pick up a feeding pillow, swaddles, crib sets and rugs. My personal favourites are the super soft comforters and towels. Find them at –
