Shh! Its a secret: Bangalore

Mom’s little hideout

Sometimes we need to hide from our kids. Its summer holidays, they’ve been underfoot whining, fighting and yelling and you just need some space to get your sanity back.  The bathroom’s usually my secret hidey-hole and good for about 10 minutes, before they come banging at the door. But if you need a wee bit more R&R than that, soothe your sensitive soul by booking a body massage at Atmasparsh on Cunningham Crescent.

Atmasparsh is located on the top floor of a children’s preschool, and while that might seem to defeat the purpose of “getting away from the terrible tykes”, you’re well insulated from all the noise and chaos below. Listen to wind chimes, feel the cool breeze wafting over you, let your thoughts drift and become a boneless blob under Renuka’s magic hands. De-blob yourself after an hour and head one floor below into the Secret Garden. Very aptly named, this tiny cafe transports you to the Mediterranean and serves up the freshest basil pesto in town. Follow that up with a beautiful, chocolate-y desert and you’ll be human again. And armed to walk back into the battlefields brimming with calm and spreading some of your new-found serenity all around.

There’s just one problem. One perfect afternoon at Atmasparsh and Secret Garden, and the bathroom’s just not going to cut it anymore.

Body massage with steam - Rs.700. Other personal care treatments available.
Atmasparsh, 12, Cunningham Crescent Road, Tel: 080 41473085/22204964. Open all days from 9.30 am to 6.30 pm

Mummy’s Day Off: Bangalore

Saturday Night Live

So you’ve been on your feet all week. Your back hurts from carrying the baby, and your jaw is stiff from yelling at your tireless 5 year old to “for heaven’s sake come and eat your dinner!” Your husband’s working the late shift and your maid has gone off to get married. And to top it all, you’ve got a deadline looming. You’ve no idea if you’re going to make it to the weekend in once piece.

But of course the weekend does come. And what do you do? You plan out an hour-by-hour schedule for the kids, kiss your hubby good bye and head off for your fave night spot - the Sparty at Peaches Salon. From 7pm to 10pm on Saturday, while your loving spouse does the dishes and changes the diapers, you indulge yourself with a luscious, rejuvenating experience. You pamper yourself silly with manicures and pedicures, facials, hair treatments, aromatherapy massages- the works. And the best bit is that your girlfriends are there to compare the week’s ups and downs with. Wine and nibbles help you along the path to relaxation, and the flea market offers much-needed retail therapy that makes the coming week so much gentler to face.

Can’t think of a better Saturday night out.

Peaches, 12, Aga Abbas Ali Road, Bangalore 560042. Telephone: 41131234/25323922. Weekdays: 9.30 am-7.30 pm; Sundays: 11 am-7.30 pm. Rates: Rs 20 for upper-lip threading to Rs 4000 for chocolate body wrap.

Love Lamaze

I love Lamaze! I didn’t get to love it when I actually needed to because there were no Lamaze centres when I was pregnant four years back. But now they seem to be everywhere. Good, I have options for the lucky second child, the one you don’t make the same mistakes with. I got an opportunity to accompany a colleague for her Lamaze class a couple of weeks back.

She had enrolled at Privat Hospital (that’s not a typo, that’s the name of the hospital) for Shruti Saxena’s Lamaze classes. Shruti Saxena is one of India’s first certified Lamaze Childbirth Educators. She is also a Reebok fitness instructor and has trained in USA with Motherwell for pre and post-natal fitness training. I was immediately drawn into the session. This particular class was mainly fitness and exercise and I learnt some wonderful techniques to practise for leg aches and discomfort in the back. How I wish I knew then what I know now. There were a dozen or so moms - excited, nervous and simply mesmerized by what they were learning.

The Lamaze Technique is a childbirth technique developed in the 1940s by French obstetrician Dr. Fernand Lamaze as an alternative to the use of medication and painkillers during childbirth. This is essentially a relaxation technique with the aid of correct breathing and mentoring from a birth ‘aid’; who could well be the daddy himself. It was heartening to see as many daddies that day.

Hey, if any of you have stories about Lamaze aided natural births, do share them with us. I am a C-sec mommy myself.
