The Butterfly Park at Bannerghatta

I love butterflies; who doesn’t? These spectacular insects have the power to lift our spirits and somehow inspire our flighty dreams. So the Butterfly Park was definitely on my agenda this summer holiday. It took us around 40 minutes (from Koramangala) to get to the Park which is right next to the Bannerghatta National Park.

The Park is a bit of a walk from the parking lot so you might want to carry your summer hats and water, especially if it’s a lovely warm day. Once you’re inside the gates, you find yourself in a green oasis with dappled sunlight and butterflies floating around.  Inside this 7 acre park is a three-domed structure, which is the main attraction.

You enter into the first dome which is a conservatory and impersonates a lush wet tropical cocoon, complete with a small waterfall and a stream with Koi carps swimming in it.

There are more than 20 species of butterflies gliding around in this enclosed “rain forest” and small placards are installed to help identify them. I felt really rewarded hearing my son’s excited cries of  “Look Mama, a plain tiger!” “Look at this one” and “It’s sitting on my hand!” The next two connected domes house a museum and information centre. There are posters, interactive simulations and living displays with eggs, caterpillars and pupas elucidating the butterfly life cycle. A collection of preserved butterflies and moths are displayed in glass cases and you can behold some of the famous non-local specimens like the “Luna Moth” and the “Australian Birdwing”. Spectacular! An inspiring picnic for any age, it’s a must do; I’ve already done it twice these holidays and my son is already clamouring for more!

Gift your child and his friends a ‘Go Green’ picnic

We head to the Alibaug coast regularly and enroute, just past Karnala, there are a few nurseries - of the green, rooted to the ground variety. Our favourite is Go Green, which is currently exhibiting herbal / medicinal plants. The Satavri plant brings back memories of the first few months with our baby when the gynie had introduced me to Satavri X, a delicious powder to be mixed with warm milk that guarantees great lactation. Believe me it works.

Our baby skips from one plant to the other, explores the ecosystem in the pond with frogs, tadpoles, fish and weeds galore, and proceeds indoors to gawk at the pipes, gardening hardware, ceramic floating ducks and frogs, bambi shaped sprinklers, decorative pebbles and neatly displayed packets of seeds.

Go Green is an acre of beautifully landscaped gardens surrounding a quaint, red-tiled bungalow which also houses a cafeteria. These proactive gardeners have also come up with a program named ‘Nature Dating’ aimed at introducing youngsters the world of plants. The one day program is ideal for children from the ages of 6 to 15. The all day itinerary includes breakfast, lunch, tea, a tour with the botanists, an a/v on nature, a quiz and a visit to the village gramudyog to check out vermiculture, pottery and soap making.

This nursery is one place you come out feeling refreshed, happy and with an arm load of plants and curios. Ideal months to plan a day here would be September to March. You do need to have a minimum group size of 30 for the program so get the monkeys together, call the gardeners and fix the transport for your tryst with nature.

Nature Dating:
Monday – Saturday. 9 am to 4.30 pm Rs. 175/- with breakfast, vegetarian lunch and tea. Optionally, half day programs from 9 am to 1 pm or 2 pm to 6 pm without meals for Rs. 110/-
