Mummy’s Day Off: Bangalore

Saturday Night Live

So you’ve been on your feet all week. Your back hurts from carrying the baby, and your jaw is stiff from yelling at your tireless 5 year old to “for heaven’s sake come and eat your dinner!” Your husband’s working the late shift and your maid has gone off to get married. And to top it all, you’ve got a deadline looming. You’ve no idea if you’re going to make it to the weekend in once piece.

But of course the weekend does come. And what do you do? You plan out an hour-by-hour schedule for the kids, kiss your hubby good bye and head off for your fave night spot - the Sparty at Peaches Salon. From 7pm to 10pm on Saturday, while your loving spouse does the dishes and changes the diapers, you indulge yourself with a luscious, rejuvenating experience. You pamper yourself silly with manicures and pedicures, facials, hair treatments, aromatherapy massages- the works. And the best bit is that your girlfriends are there to compare the week’s ups and downs with. Wine and nibbles help you along the path to relaxation, and the flea market offers much-needed retail therapy that makes the coming week so much gentler to face.

Can’t think of a better Saturday night out.

Peaches, 12, Aga Abbas Ali Road, Bangalore 560042. Telephone: 41131234/25323922. Weekdays: 9.30 am-7.30 pm; Sundays: 11 am-7.30 pm. Rates: Rs 20 for upper-lip threading to Rs 4000 for chocolate body wrap.

Watermelon Kids: Mumbai

A trendy tots hair styling destination

Our mougli had gorgeous light brown, soft curls till the age of a year and a half. We got the ‘what a cute little girl’ ever so often but the deciding factor was a heat rash on his neck. As vanity is not his high point no hair bands or scrunchies were entertained. With trepidation of a mama who does not want to part with her darling’s locks his first haircut saw less than an inch off his forehead done by his personal haircutter – me.

Then I heard there was a special salon for kids and thought ‘now what! Baby Pedicures? No thanks.’ A little more investigation revealed that it is a parlour for hair cuts only. None of the fun grown up stuff.

Watermelon Kids (Bandra / Vashi) is a great place to head to. The Bandra salon has a large play area lounge with a foosball table, basket ball hoops and balls, a small plastic slide and a netted area with colourful small balls. The actual hair cutting area is tiny but has two stations; one is a car shaped seat with wheels that move and a steering wheel. The other is a colourful stool. Both stations have large mirrors and a small TV screen for cartoon viewing. The stylists are gentle, talented and experienced when dealing with small, fidgety kids. Ask Dilshad for the current trends.

An exclusive kid’s parlour is a super idea and most mums who know of this one don’t bother going elsewhere. Watch out for the weekend rush.
