Dolls of the World

Holidays are here again and having the kids at home is wonderful - mostly. Until my four year old can read on her own, I have to find other fascinating things for her to enjoy. My dad suggested ‘Shanker’s International Doll’s Museum’, bringing back lovely memories I had of the place. This was going to be good, finding an indoor fun place beyond ‘gaming zones’.

Shanker’s Doll Museum has the smell of dak bungalows and there’s something slightly surreal about those delicate dolls staring at you from their glass cases. But all that just adds to the place’s charm and character. My daughter was inexhaustible with the questions and the number of times we saw the exhibit. We saw dolls from Yugoslavia, Sweden, Thailand, Combodia, Brazil and some of the most unique ones were from our own country. The museum exchanges and trades with collectors from all over the world and each doll is meticulously hand crafted with a special emphasis on traditional clothes and accessories.

We will definitely be visiting here again. The only to tip to remember with the little ones is to make sure you explain that these dolls are special and not for sale. They are for all the kids to enjoy.

K Shanker Pillai was a renowned cartoonist who started collecting dolls as a hobby. Within years he had a collection of 500 dolls from his trips in Pandit Nehru’s entourage. Today they are proudly showcased in Nehru House at Shankar’s International Dolls Museum, Nehru House, 4 Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, New Delhi 110002. Phone 91-11-3316970–74. Open 6 days a week, Monday is a weekly off. Timings – 10 am – 5:30 pm.

Petit Picassos

Managing my pre-schooler without the school bit is proving to be quite harrowing. That’s what summer vacations are, heaven for kids and not as pleasant for the parents. It’s unimaginable for me to send her for camps and classes in this weather, she is only 3, yet she is active and smart enough to want more than just cartoons, reading sessions and home play. So how do I combine activity, fun, comfort and a level of imagination and innovation into my daughter’s week? ‘Color Factory’ has the answer!

Colour Factory is India’s first Paint-Your-Own-Pottery store and I‘m so glad it is in my city. Here both kids and adults can flex their creative muscles and showcase their painting and design skills across various products like plates, platters, mugs, vases and even photo frames. The process is simple, choose a product, take a seat and start painting. The store provides ample seating space with table and chair setups for parents to work with kids or for friends to work together. The in-house staff is always available to help with your new creation. Once you’re done, the store will pop in your masterpiece for a quick bake and glaze (sadly the process can take a couple of days). Once done, there you have it, your own custom made coffee mug.

This place is very special for kids interested in the arts since there is plenty of creative freedom, aprons to avoid a mess and a whole hour to enjoy the activity. They also have a cafe in the store, so your kids don’t go hungry while they play Picasso.

All the unpainted ceramic pieces are priced individually and include instructions, painting at the time of purchase, glazing and firing. Clay pottery on the wheel is priced at Rs.225/- per item. Creating items on the slab will cost you Rs.175/-. An additional Rs.125/- is charged if you want to paint the item you created on the slab. Charges for Mosaic are based on the item you choose to do mosaic art on, as that will determine how many mosaic tiles you will use.

Oranges and Lemons

“Summertime, and the living is easy…”

Whoever penned the words to that lovely, soulful jazz ballad certainly didn’t live in a tropical country like India.

For us, summertime time means sweat, humidity, power-cuts and a fierce sun that totally zaps all the energy out of you the moment you step out of the confines of your house turning you into a limp, dish-cloth.

While its one thing to endure the war-cries of my two little boys as they play super heroes battling blood-thirsty dinosaurs, it’s another thing altogether to see them lying about the house, lethargic, red-faced and totally drained of all energy.

Our mothers and our grandmothers would keep at us to drink water by the litre, just to keep well hydrated. My sons’ paediatrician is big on fluids as well and can’t keep reminding me enough to make sure that my boys have enough.

Well, since I can’t magic them into merboys and throw them into the sea, or an aquarium at the very least, I do the next best thing. I half-drown them in Glucon-D.

Jokes apart, this instant energy drink, fortified with Vitamins B1, B3 and C, as well as calcium and phosphorous, are just what the weather demands. While the original flavour may not get their choosy taste-buds to sing, the Tangy Orange and Lemony Lime more than do the trick.

And you know what? I quite like a drink of it too!
